Scoping

“Overly ambitious” is how I would describe myself during my first jam.

I was tasked to design the fighting mechanics and so I began writing ideas. The game was going to be a top-down beat’em up.

When I was asked how long I expect the game to last, I answered “30 minutes” which wasn't a good answer given the team's reactions. While a bit bummed, I went over my work and simplified the fighting mechanics. No more upgrades and status effects, I stuck to the basics. Light punch, heavy punch and item throw to still have some spice.

Fighting mechanics

Sparkus has 3 attacks :
- A single target light punch, to quickly beat foes and break items.
- An AOE heavy punch, to deal with multiple enemies in one strike..
- An item throw, to take care of ranged targets.

Personal thoughts

Being my first real video game project, I've learned a lot from it. It gave me a glimpse of what was expected from me and comforted me in my decision to become a game designer. For a rookie, I was definitely too ambitious, and had a lot of ideas scrapped, but that's how I understood that I shouldn't get attached to them and that it's part of the creative process.
